Alvar Luis Velez

Waukegan, Illinois

In Loving Memory of Alvar “Al” Velez

Alvar “Al” Velez, 81, was born on June 30, 1945, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. At the age of 10, he moved with his family to the United States, eventually settling in Lebanon, Missouri, where his life’s journey would take shape and where he would meet his high school sweetheart, Sue Velez, beginning a chapter that would become an important part of his story.

Al was a hardworking, loving, and funny man who had a gift for making people feel welcome. A true people person, he enjoyed being surrounded by others, sharing stories, making people laugh, and bringing joy wherever he went. He had a big heart, a wonderful sense of humor, and a way of connecting with people that made him unforgettable.

Music was one of Al’s greatest passions and an essential part of who he was. A phenomenal singer, he performed professionally with the band Junction for more than 20 years. Music was more than a hobby to Al; it was a calling, a source of joy, and a way to connect with people. He loved all kinds of music and had a particular admiration for Elvis Presley. Through his voice and his years of performing, Al shared his talent and love of music with countless people, creating memories that will live on long after the final song.

Al also loved to cook and enjoyed the simple pleasure of bringing people together over a good meal. Whether through music, food, laughter, or conversation, he had a natural ability to make people feel at home. His hardworking spirit, generous heart, and lively personality were qualities that defined him throughout his life.

Above all, Al cherished the people in his life. He leaves behind a family who loved him deeply and who will carry his memory forward through the stories they share, the laughter they remember, and the music that will forever remind them of him.

Al is survived by his Son, Shawn (Jennibeth) ; Daughter/Granddaughter, Sherina ; his 3 Grandchildren, Ysabel, Gabriel, Bella, and Sebastian, and his three surviving siblings, Hiram, Hermes and Orlando.

His is proceeded in death by his Father Luis; Mother Elsa; Stepmother, Loli ; Daughter Shelley, Sister, Elsita; and Wife Marilyn Sue .

Al’s life was a melody of hard work, love, laughter, and music. Though his voice may be silent, the songs he sang, the lives he touched, and the love he gave will never be forgotten.
May he rest in peace, and may his song play on forever in the hearts of those who loved him.
